Equipment

  • Large Skillet
  • Spatula

Ingredients

For the Taco Meat

  • 1 tbsp olive oil helps brown the meat evenly
  • 1 pound lean ground beef
  • 2 tsp chili powder adds a mild kick and smoky depth
  • 2 tsp cumin warm and earthy flavor
  • 1/2 tsp dried oregano subtle herbal note
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/2 tsp salt
  • 1/2 tsp black pepper
  • 2 tbsp tomato paste thickens the sauce
  • 1/2 cup water creates a flavorful sauce

For Serving the Tacos

  • 8 corn or flour tortillas warmed
  • Lettuce, finely chopped
  • Shredded Mexican cheese blend or cheddar
  • Tomatoes, chopped
  • Red onions, chopped

Instructions

  • Brown the Beef: Heat olive oil in a large skillet over medium-high heat. Add the ground beef and break it apart as it cooks. Brown for 5-7 minutes, until no pink remains. Drain any excess fat.
  • Add Seasonings and Tomato Paste: Reduce heat to medium. Sprinkle in the chili powder, cumin, oregano, garlic powder, salt, and pepper, stirring to coat the beef. Add the tomato paste and mix until fully combined.
  • Simmer the Filling: Pour in the water and stir, scraping up any browned bits. Let the mixture simmer for 3-5 minutes, until the liquid reduces slightly and forms a saucy coating.
  • Warm the Tortillas: While the meat simmers, warm your tortillas in the microwave or on a hot, dry skillet for a few seconds per side.
  • Assemble the Tacos: Spoon a generous portion of the seasoned beef mixture into each warm tortilla. Top with chopped lettuce, diced tomatoes, shredded cheese, and red onions. Serve immediately.

Chef's Pro-Tips

  • Don't Overcrowd the Pan: For the best browning, make sure your skillet is hot and the beef has enough space. This creates flavor!
  • Drain the Grease: After browning, be sure to drain off any excess fat from the lean ground beef to prevent greasy tacos.
  • Toast Your Spices: Letting the spices cook with the meat for a minute before adding water helps to bloom their flavor.
